Dr Alva Astronomy is a gift box designed for the Mid-Autumn Festival, a traditional Chinese celebration. The box holds moon cakes and a small projection lamp shaped like a telescope. The telescope is taken out, placed in the observatory section of the box and rotated to project an image of the moon. The design refers to the custom of moon viewing and to the idea of bringing the moon into every household. The gift box is made of cardboard and paper with printing and plexiglass parts, and measures 350 by 350 by 550 millimetres.
Astronomy Gift Box by Kang Jiang has been identified as an innovative representation of communication design by the A' Design Award. Astronomy Gift Box was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in Packaging Design in 2022. The A' Packaging Design Award is a juried, academic and highly prestigious design prize that celebrates outstanding design of bottles, boxes, cans, pouches, tubes, cartons, wrappers, bags and more.
